case sensitive SQL - pls help a noob

I just created my first Asp.net app. I had to install it to a corporate server. What I found is that the corporate SQL Server 2000 was case sensitive in the stored procedures while my installation was not!
How can I set my SQL Server 2000 to be case sensitive as well?Case sensitivity depends on the codepage you select at install.
If you want to do it afterwards you need to rebuild the master table.
See 'Rebuilding the master database' in the SQL Server
books online.

Capacity Planning

We are going to install a call centre application.
According to end user, there will be around 500 request
has to be inputted into the system.
We will use SQL Server 2000 as the DB. We would like to
know what factors we have to consider - Like recovery
model, database maintenance plan, fill factors ? Is it
necessary for us to archive some old data to an archive
datbase ?

Those are really business decisions.
i.e. if you need to run 24x7 vs 9-5x5, your decisions will be different.
If you can do with downtime, you may go with a different decisions on
architecture.
As for archiving, again, that's a business decision. Do you want to archive
data or not?

We will make full database backup daily. What is the

500 a day? That's about one a minute. You can run this thing on a desktop
machine.
> We will make full database backup daily. What is the

Generally a backup is for disaster recovery. An archive is for storing data
for later analysis or for other reasons.
For example, I keep backups of only a few days (my databases generally have
enough churn that in a few days the bulk of the data has changed anyway.)
But there's certain data I archive to tape (in a different schema etc) that
I may keep for much longer.
Now, as for once a day backups, that may or may not work. Your database
sounds like it will probably be fairly small to start, so recovery time will
be about the same as backup. i.e. if it takes 10 minutes to backup, it'll
take about 10 minutes to restore. Plus any time to fix up minor issues.
However, let's say you start a backup at 5:01 PM.
What happens if your DB crashes at 5:00 PM. Can you afford to lose a day's
worth of data?

Can't use Virtual PC for VS 2005 Pro with SQL Server Express

I am unable to successfully complete an install of Visual Studio 2005 with SQL Server 2005 Express on a Virtual PC 2004 image, which seems to be a pretty reasonable expectation. The installation completes successfully all of the way through in a Windows XP Pro SP2 image, but at the end the installation program informs you that SQL Server Express has failed to install, with no other explanation. No setup log files give any information as to why the installation failed. Then I see in the fine print for SQL Server Express downloads that "There is no support in this release for Virtual Server, Virtual PC". (http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/c/6/cc66b572-a402-4c6a-8233-b9c7d05840c7/RequirementsSQLEXP2005.htm)
Is this indeed the case that we essentially cannot run the full VS 2005 installation in Virtual PC? Is there no workaround for this problem?
Express is certainly supported on Virtual PC and Virtual Server. It's hard to say for sure at this late date but I'm going to blame a bug in VS that was fixed by RTM.

Cant upgrade to SP3 in Win Server 2003

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2000 on a newly-installed Win 2003
Server box. My disk is SQL Server SP 2. I got the error message
stating that I couldn't run SQL Server less than SP 3, but I
downloaded the patches from Microsoft's website figuring I'd install
SP 2 off the disk and then install the SP 3 from the download.

Trouble is, when I try to install SP 3, it can't authenticate the
login I give it, either the Windows logon or the sa password, to
actually install SP 3.

I've double-checked the passwords and permissions, and the Windows
logon _should_ be working, and the sa password is definitely what I'm
using in the SP 3 installation program, but no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

If this doesn't help, perhaps you can give some more information. Is
the Windows account you're using for the installation a local
administrator? By default, members of that group are in the MSSQL
sysadmin role, so that should be the easiest way to avoid permissions
issues.

Joseph,
Are you installing over Terminal services/remote desktop? You might
want to try VNC or use Control Panel: Add/remove programs to locate
your setup.bat file and run from there. You might also want to check
your Windows Temp and TMP Environment Variables. You need to ensure
that these variables have no spaces in the path. For example, set them
to C:/TMP and C:/TEMP instead of C:/Program files/Temp. You might
also want to locate the log file that the Service Pack writes to...you
should find the error in there! Hope this helps!

Christian,
Have you checked the contents of SQLSP.Log ? You might find more

Can't upgrade to RS SP1

I was able to install RS on my dev machine with no issues, but the SP1
upgrade package keeps crashing. I was able to upgrade our servers to
SP1, and other developers have been able to upgrade there PCs as well.
The error log says:
[Info] Calling MsiApplyPatch with szPatchPackage = c:\14763ee99882cc0c1d73512936\sp1patch.msp
and szInstallPackage = {null} and eInstallType = INSTALLTYPE_DEFAULT

[Info] MsiApplyPatch returned 1603
[Info] Reporting Error 1603 using Dr. Watson.
[Info] Setup exit code is 1603
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks,
BurtIs there an RSSp1msp#.log file? This log file should contain the actual
error.

Thanks for getting back to me. The only part of the RSSp1msp#.log that
seems to contain an error is pasted below. My issues with that portion
are:
-I don't need to update my database, just the app server on my dev box
-ReportServer isn't the right name for the current database. That was
the name of the initial one we created and did not use.
-But the ReportServer database still exists and I am dbo, contrary to
what the message says.
Any addition help would be greatly appreciated.

requires DB updates.
You said that you changed the name of the DB. How did you do this, with
RSConfig? Setup should be using the values in the rsreportserver.config
file for connecting to the DB. If you rename the DB does RS still work?
Finally, like setup for RS, SP1 uses the user running setup to talk to the
DB. This user needs to have system Admin rights in Sql Server. Please
ensure this is the case.

Can't uninstall previous version of AdventureWorks database

I want to install the new (February 2007) sample databases. The readme says any previous version must be removed by dropping the database., then running Remove from Add or Remove Programs. I've detached the database, but when I try to uninstall it I get the following message:

"Error 1309.Error reading from file: pathandfilename.mdf. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it."

What should I do.

It sounds like the uninstall is expecting the file to exisit and you much have deleted it? If you run a repair first it should replace the file then you can run an uninstall.

Thanks

Michelle

|||Both the AdventureWorksDB mdf and ldf files are there. All I've done is detached them first. I tried "Repair"ing the installation first. This ran successfully, but I still couldn't uninstall afterwards.|||Once you have detached the databases then it means that is uninstalled, try to reinstall by applying from the Feb.2007 update.|||Deleting the two database files (after detaching of course!), then running the Uninstall from Add/Remove programs worked!

Can't uninstall books Online CTP Preview

It shows in Add/Remove Programs. I had ASP.NET 2.0 installed and Add/Remove Programs tells me I need 2.0 before I can Install Books Online. But I'm trying to Uninstall Books Online. I uninstalled 2.0 with no effect. I reinstalled 2.0 with no effect. I searched Program Files and the Register and can't find Book Online. It won't go away. How to get rid of it? Thank you.

There is no Books Online dependency on ASP.NET. However, the CTP versions of SQL Server (including Books Online) do have a dependency on a specific version of .NET Framework 2.0. That is, the version of .NET Frameworks 2.0 required for the June CTP is different than the version of .NET Framework 2.0 required for the September CTP. The specific version of .NET Framework 2.0 must be installed and available when you uninstall SQL Server or Books Online. This is an unfortunate side effect of one beta application having a dependency on another beta application.
Please try these steps to get your CTP version of Books Online uninstalled.
1. Uninstall the version of .NET Frameworks you have installed now.
2 Install the .NET Frameworks 2.0 version that is appropriate for the CTP version of Books Online you have installed by using one of the following links.

For the September CTP, select the download link to the version of .NET Frameworks available from this site : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ADC75E35-7245-4038-9B8A-B8FABAEC16DA&displaylang=en

For the June CTP, select the download link to the version of .NET Frameworks available from this site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f0d182c1-c3aa-4cac-b45c-bd15d9b072b7&DisplayLang=en

If you're not sure which CTP version of Books Online you have, right-click in any BOL topic and select View Source. Search for the words "Topic built:". The date after that phrase will either be a September or June date.

3. From Add/Remove Programs uninstall Books Online.
4. From Add/Remove Programs uninstall .NET Frameworks 2.0 installed in step 2.

Regards,

|||Thanks for taking the time to respond. After going to bed at 4 AM, again, and awakening from a nightmare I resolved to cut my losses, reformat the hard drive and start fresh. The first thing I installed, after Windows and all my drivers, was dot Net 2.0 and the SQL 2005 Server 180 day Evaluation program. Seems to be working fine.

I would recommend this to anyone if their situation permits. Now I have a clean machine, which provides a comfortable feeling. It will take many more hours to reinstall and reconfigure all my programs, but that dwarfs [[edit - oops, is dwarfed by ]] the time already wasted. I'm not blaming Microsoft, and I understand that this was Beta software. This 919 Meg download takes an hour and a half, but it includes the 2005 version of Visual Studio, which is a beautiful program. Many thanks to Microsoft for their fine work. Looking forward to the upcoming 2005 road show in Olando.|||

Hi Steve,
I'm glad you were able to resolve the problem. I know starting from scratch can be time consuming, but as you pointed out, when going from beta software to production code, it's definitely worth starting with a clean machine (even on a test machine).

If possible, you might consider using something like Virtual PC for testing future beta applications.

Regards,
Gail

|||Your instructions were much more precise than the "read me" file. Could the read me be improved?

The trouble is too many variables. Incomplete instructions require guessing, blind allies, recovery, trying something else, etc. The advantage of a read me file is that it can be updated.

I spent probably 24 nonproductive hours with this and a similar Beta problem a couple weeks ago. Productive time, learning something new, is fine. Time going around in circles due to arbitrary idiosyncracies is different. For example, I don't mind the 8 hours I spent the other day debugging a javascript. Specific Beta version dependencies is arbitrary information.

Thanks again.|||I'll check into getting the readme modified.

Thanks,|||

Gaile,

I had the exact issue. Your help above sold my issue perfectly. All I did was install only the .NET Framework I needed and my BOL uninstalled just fine.

Thanks,

Scott

Can't Uninstall 2005 Beta

I am trying to uninstall the beta version so I can install the CTP version.
I tried using the Cleanup Wizard that came with the CTP version but it errors
when trying to uninstall the beta version - says I have to use Add/Remove
programs.
But when I try to use Add/Remove programs, I get a message that says "the
..Net Framework 2.0 is not installed. Please install before running setup."
The 2.0 beta framework is installed.
How do I uninstall the beta SQL Server and all its components (reporting
services, notification services, etc.)?
Hi
Is the correct version of the 2.0 framework installed (the one that came
with your beta).
It is best to ask SQL Server 2005 Beta questions in the beta newsgroups as
MS will give support in those and not here.
